Abstract
This study aims to conduct an analysis of the geographical patterns of fire behavior in a relatively understudied region of the world, specifically Northwest Europe. The phenomenon of climate change is giving rise to novel patterns of fire occurrence, necessitating more investigation. Remote sensing techniques have shown to be a valuable means of conducting precise assessments at a regional scale. This project has successfully produced tools for the quantification and initial characterization of regional-level behavior within the Atlantic bioregion of Europe. It was feasible to delineate a fire regime that deviated significantly from the previously examined Mediterranean ecosystems. The quantification of area spread, and growth rates was conducted, resulting in the generation of an open database including quantitative behavior information. Presently, researchers are investigating the underlying factors that drive this behavior by examining the variability in vegetation conditions, particularly via the perspectives of phenology and meteorology.
