Making Change in Wildfire Management: Science Policy Interaction

Course Information:

The Training Event ‘Making Change – Science Policy Interaction’ related fire governance to governance of other risks, covering fire, land and emergency management policy at local, national and EU level. The training focused on lessons learned from various disciplines and major international initiatives (e.g., Sendai, Sustainable Development Goals, RescEU), and challenges of science policy interaction and making change. PyroLife ITN Training Events provided diverse international, intersectoral, interdisciplinary and gender perspectives, organised by leading academic and non-academic PyroLife ITN consortium members.

Course Structure:

This course covered 2 ECTS – 56 hours with:

  • Online module (16 hours incl. preparatory reading, lectures, group work time, presentations)
  • Field module, Cyprus (40 hours incl. preparatory reading)
  • This course was open to any PhD candidate interested in wildfire management (max. 25 participants, selection was done jointly by organisers and PyroLife ITN Supervisory Board)
  • It is mandatory for PyroLife ITN Early Stage Researchers to attend both modules. External participants could register for only one or both modules.

Learning goals and online module:

  • In depth interdisciplinary understanding of wildfires with a particular focus on its policy dimensions
  • Exposure to different geographical and cultural contexts
  • State-of-the-art and challenges seen from industrial and academic perspectives
  • Introduction governance theory in general and in a context of natural resources, disaster risk, forest governance
  • EU and global perspective: multi-level governance, Sendai, SDGs, etc
  • Science and policy practitioner perspectives
  • Wildfire governance: bottom up and participatory governance
  • Terms and narratives: critical understanding of ‘resilience’
  • Introduction to policy analysis in a context of wildfire policies for the course assignment
  • Course assignment (group work): wildfire policy analysis in groups, then plenary presentation, supported by expert tutor (e.g., Canada, US, Australia, South Africa, Portugal, regional AIB plan Italy, etc)

  • 3 hours preparatory reading
  • Monday April 4th: 9-11 CEST and 15-17 CEST lectures
  • Tuesday April 5th: 9-11 CEST group work time, 15-17 CEST lecture
  • Wednesday April 6th 9-11 CEST lecture, 15-18 CEST presentations

  • Understand wildfire governance approach and policy set up in Cyprus
  • Understand relevant regional collaborations: e.g., RescEU
  • Lessons learned governance & policy from the 2021 Arakapas fire event
  • Discussion and critical reflection of language and terms used in wildfire management
  • From response to prevention in Cyprus: connections to research of participants
  • Round table discussions with local expert, interactive sessions
  • Field exercise: hypothetical management scenarios vs policy reality
  • Preparatory reading material will be send out 3 weeks before start of the course

Wednesday, April 6th 9-11 CEST lecture, 15-18 CEST presentations		 April 11-14th, full days (schedule announced once enrolled). Arrival by April 10th, departure on April 14th after 15:00 local time (or in consultation with organisers)
Course fee No course fee for the online module.


 600 Euro/participant, incl. 40 hours course with field visits, interactive sessions. Course materials. Pick up at the airport (Larnaca or Paphos) on Sunday, April 10th, drop off on April 14th after 15:00. Accomodation 4 nights in Troodos (hotel incl. breakfast) April 10th-14th. Transportation for field visits with local invited experts, interactive sessions. Coffee and lunch.
