Growing up in the winelands of South Africa on a farm, farmlife shaped Hugo to have an affinity for open spaces and adventure, but also for people. After a bachelors in Forest Resource Management he planted trees, fought fires and controlled invasive weeds as a forester in the intensive forestry of KwaZulu Natal the leading to a passion for forest and risk management.
His doctoral research focusses on risk reduction as part of wildfire prevention and understanding of wildfire in North Western Europe from this perspective. This means a proactive approach with heightened awareness, collaboration, and knowledge exchange among stakeholders. He will graduate during the of summer 2024.
